Genetic testing (PGT and PGS) in Iran

In Iran, infertility treatment centers use a new method called preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), which is also called preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), to find genetic problems in embryos before moving them to the mother’s uterus. Usually, this process is done along with either in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

Let’s start with an important question:

What is the goal of PGT?

  • PGT is used for many things in Iran, such as finding genetic problems that could cause a pregnancy to end or a baby to be born with problems.
  • Finding dangerous genetic diseases in embryos and stopping them from happening.
  • Choices about sex and balancing a family.

The process of PGT in Iran

In Iran, the PGT process is made up of several steps:

1Formation of an embryo

IVF or ICSI are used to make embryos.

Formation of an embryo
Culture of embryos

2Culture of embryos

The embryos are grown in a lab for three to five days or until they reach the stage of six to ten cells.

3Biopsy

One or two cells are taken out of the embryo so that their genes can be tested.

Biopasy
Genetic analysis

4Genetic analysis

Certain methods are used to examine the DNA of the cells collected to find any genetic problems.

5Embryo selection

Using the genetic analysis results, embryos without genetic problems are chosen to be transferred to the uterus or frozen for later use.

PGT Type in Iran

In Iran, there are different kinds of Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT):

1Screening for aneuploidy, or PGT-A: During this type of PGT, embryos are checked for chromosomal problems, especially aneuploidy (an abnormal amount of chromosomes). This is what it’s best for:
  • Women who are already mothers (over 35)
  • Couples who have lost more than one baby in the past
  • Couples who have failed IVF more than once
  • Men can cause serious cases of infertility.

2PGT-M (Monogenic/Single Gene illnesses), looks for genetic changes that can lead to inherited illnesses. This form is used for couples who carry autosomal recessive diseases.

  • People who have autosomal dominant disorders.
  • Families with diseases that are linked to X.

3You can use the PGT-SR (Structural Rearrangements) type to find chromosome structural problems like translocations or inversions. Couples where one partner has a known genetic structural rearrangement should get it.

4PGD: In Iran, PGD is also used to choose between male and female babies. This is done for medical reasons (to stop genetic diseases linked to sex) and for family balance.

Cost and Accessibility

A typical IVF  and Sex selection procedure in Iran costs around $3800, a lot less than in the US, where it can cost around $27,000. This, along with the high quality of the services, makes Iran popular for medical tourists interested in reproductive genetics.

In summary, genetic testing through PGD and PGS is a well-established and beneficial service in Iran, offering advanced reproductive options at a significantly lower cost.
